In
this article Annette Lamb the evolution of books and its benefits. She explains how books are mostly not what
they had been decades ago. Now, books
are accessible through iPads, Nooks, Kindles, tablets, and various smart
phones. Not only has accessibility to
books has revolutionized but it is also innovative by having numerous features
available. Features such as highlighters,
dictionaries, virtual bookmarks, note and taking tools, are some available through
electronic books, e-books. Lamb
discusses how most authors have their texts, books, in e-books exclusively,
allowing them to adapt features in form of games, maps, or images that allow
the student to grasp the idea the author is trying to share with the
reader. Even though there are many tools
that can support the subject or topic being taught a teacher must be careful on
what sources are chosen in order to not distract the student or have him or her
misunderstand the topic.
Q1: What are the advantages of using e-books when
teaching?
When a
student uses e-books to learn a certain topic tools such as, highlighters,
dictionaries, virtual bookmarks, note and taking tools are easily accessed; allowing
the student to analyze and understand the content better if using them
accordingly. There are also interactive
programs available that allow the student to grasp a better understanding, and
actually learn, through various game-like activities, making learning fun and
memorable.
Q2: How
can students’ learning benefit rather than hinder when using e-books?
Something
new and innovative can obstruct students’ learning if they do not know how to
use the various features available. It
is important for teachers to go over the instructions on how to use and exploit
the many useful features of any e-book with the class.
